Why Take a Career Break?

In our fast-paced modern world, productivity and doing is valued above well-being, and this level of pressure to achieve leads to:

  • burnout

  • stress

  • disease

  • conflict, resentment, & reactivity

and a host of negative consequences.

I passionately believe that creating sustainable lives that prioritize our well-being make for:

  • more effective/productive work over time

  • more nourishing relationships

  • a happier and healthier life that is infused with respect for our holistic selves

In treating ourselves with this care and respect, we begin to bring the world the holistic awareness it so deeply needs to heal and thrive.

Signs You May Need a Career Break

Recognizing what you need is the first step!

While not everyone can take an extended career break due to responsibilities at home or at work, finances, caring for family, aging parents, or community etc., everyone can experience more work/life balance (see below!).

Or sometimes we are forced to take a career break by being let go, a health issue, or crisis. While this can be scary and create instability, I can work with you to find ways to can turn this forced break into an opportunity to nurture your deepest self.

I can help you assess whether you can take a career break and plan it to meet your needs. Whether your career break is for a weekend, a week, a month, or 6 months or more, I can help you:

  • plan how long a break you need and can take

  • plan to carve out the time in your life for your break

  • assess and access your support system for taking the break

  • identify what would be nourishing to focus on during your break (ranging from resting, rejeuvenating, and being in the present moment to reconnecting with your passions, alone time, traveling, or learning something new)

  • support you while on your break to navigate challenges, fully experience whatever emotions, insight, and needs are arising, and encourage you to stay committed to your goal of caring for yourself

Sometimes our lives don't allow for a full break. But there is still hope!

Whether you are:

  • a stay at home parent raising kids

  • a working parent supporting your family financially

  • working a job you can't step away from due to the responsibilities you hold and whose counting on you

  • a healthcare professional doing essential work while the system is set-up to neglect your well-being

  • trying to keep your head above water financially or have debt you need to pay off

  • a main support for aging parents, family, or play a big support role in your community

you may need to create mini-breaks throughout your day and week to sustain you for the long-haul. When you're giving and doing so much, we must find a way to put nourishment back in your tank to sustain you.

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May She describes "wintering" as: “a time for reflection and recuperation, for slow replenishment, for putting your house in order. Doing these deeply unfashionable things — slowing down, letting your spare time expand, getting enough sleep, resting — is a radical act now, but it’s essential.”
